40+ days have passed since 2014 brought new hopes for a brighter year as we put 2013 happily behind us. Many people said that they “felt different” as the New Year dawned, that somehow life was going to turn around this year. Is that feeling still strong, or was it just wishful thinking?
Wishful thinking and dreaming aren’t what makes a change, only goals do! The health clubs are an annual case in point – the first few weeks of the year, the regulars must wait for their favorite machines longer than usual and they find their favorite classes filled. However, by the middle to the end of February, their gym is back to normal.
Were you one of the many that made resolutions that 2014 was the year that you’d lose weight, exercise more, or learn a new skill only to be back to your old comfortable ways? You are not alone; only 5% of Americans even set goals and write them down. If you have established goals, written them down and review them daily, congratulations, you are a Five Percent-er!
If you are among those that have abandoned your New Year’s Resolutions, or are seriously thinking of giving up, let’s give it another chance! Wouldn’t you love to look back on 2014 as a breakthrough year where you actually accomplished what you hoped at the beginning of the year?
I’m not talking about “To Do” lists or getting all those busy tasks that we think we need to do every day checked off. I am talking about moving toward your dreams – remember those? The things you wanted to see, do, be and have before your twilight years. As simple as it seems, most people just don’t take the time to reflect on what they really want from life. We spend time in mindless entertainment that keeps us from creating our own “reality show”!
Take some time this month, reflect on your life – past, present and future. Where did you get off course? We can get back on course very easily by making new choices. What possibilities do you see for you, your family, business, community, state and country? Do you see something that gets you excited, angry, and determined to make a change? Write that down!
Understand WHY this opportunity has an emotional element to it that other options may not have had. The WHY is the motivation you need to see the outcomes you desire. Obstacles will be thrown in your way, doubts will rise up, others will try to talk you out of it (they have in the past, haven’t they?), you’ll have bad days when you just want to quit. We’ve all gone through that – those that get their dreams and desires, don’t give in, don’t quit when it gets a little tough. Perseverance and believing in your WHY will keep you moving forward, one little step at a time!
- Take the time to reflect on what you want your life to look like. Dream a little! Remember when you were a kid, you didn’t stop to think it wasn’t possible. Let your imagination flow. Get excited about one big idea.
- What is really possible if you stretch yourself? Can you see yourself actually achieving on a grander scale if you put in a little more effort and maybe get some direction?
- Write down at least 3 goals that you want to achieve this year that will move you closer to the “one big idea”.
- Read them every day and night so you will be thinking of your goals constantly.
We can only get so far on our own…… we need mentors, advisors and coaches to show us the way clear of the doubts and obstacles. A coach will keep you focused on the WHY so you will not be tempted off course. Bring the love back to you, love your life and the possibilities that await! If you get stuck, reach out, I will be your Leadership Coach as I give you “little love but a lot more shove”!
